US Trade with China

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, US trade with China totaled $156.4 billion, up 11.99% ($16.7 billion) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US exports to China in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $29.7 billion, up 14.36% ($3.7 billion) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US imports from China in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $126.6 billion, up 11.44% ($13.0 billion) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with China in the 2nd quarter of 2017 was $96.9 billion, a 10.58% increase ($9.3 billion) over the 2nd quarter of 2016.

China was the US largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 2nd in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 15.8519% of US total trade (up from 15.0868% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

China was the US 3rd largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 7.7321% of US total exports (up from 7.1536% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

China was the US largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 21.0423% of US total imports (up from 20.2190% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

US Exports to China

The major share of US exports to China in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 54.21% of US total exports to China (58.97% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.98% of US total exports to China (14.66% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 7.19% of US total exports to China (7.02% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 6.87% of US total exports to China (2.60% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 6.03% of US total exports to China (6.56% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.82% of US total exports to China (4.97% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.40% of US total exports to China (1.38% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 1.28% of US total exports to China (0.47% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in US exports to China in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $1,296.9 million;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $1,174.7 million;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $437.5 million;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $423.1 million;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $280.3 million;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $260.2 million;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $199.3 million;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $137.9 million;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $127.1 million;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $110.5 million.

The largest declines in US exports to China in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - a decrease of $1,011.3 million;
  • Residues and waste from the food industries; prepared animal feed (HS code 23) - a decrease of $151.6 million;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $96.6 million.
