US Trade with France

In the 1st quarter of 2017, US trade with France totaled $20.1 billion, up 2.40% ($0.5 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US exports to France in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $8.6 billion, up 8.60% ($0.7 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US imports from France in the 1st quarter of 2017 were $11.5 billion, down 1.77% ($0.2 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with France in the 1st quarter of 2017 was $3.0 billion, a 23.05% decrease ($0.9 billion) over the 1st quarter of 2016.

France was the US 8th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2017 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.1399% of US total trade (down from 2.2406% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

France was the US 10th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 11th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.2977% of US total exports (up from 2.2679% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

France was the US 10th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2017 (down from 8th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.0361% of US total imports (down from 2.2226% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

The major share of US exports to France in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 60.98% of US total exports to France (62.00% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.98% of US total exports to France (14.77% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 7.28% of US total exports to France (5.04% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.85% of US total exports to France (3.84% in the 1st quarter of 2016);

The largest declines in US exports to France in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $39.2 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $33.5 million;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $30.6 million;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $28.6 million.
