US Trade with Hong Kong

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, US trade with Hong Kong totaled $11.3 billion, up 0.50% ($0.1 billion) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

US exports to Hong Kong in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $9.5 billion, up 5.41% ($0.5 billion) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

US imports from Hong Kong in the 3rd quarter of 2017 were $1.8 billion, down 19.48% ($0.4 billion) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

US trade surplus with Hong Kong in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $7.7 billion, a 13.53% increase ($0.9 billion) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Hong Kong was the US 19th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 20th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.1444% of US total trade (down from 1.3704% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Hong Kong was the US 10th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 9th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.4934% of US total exports (down from 2.6030% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Hong Kong was the US 39th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 33rd in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2949% of US total imports (down from 0.4684% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The major share of US exports to Hong Kong in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 45.58% of US total exports to Hong Kong (44.34% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 27.95% of US total exports to Hong Kong (29.21% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 10.66% of US total exports to Hong Kong (10.46% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);

  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $49.6 million;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $40.4 million;
  • Clocks and watches and parts thereof (HS code 91) - an increase of $35.6 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Hong Kong in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:
