US Trade with India

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, US trade with India totaled $19.1 billion, up 12.38% ($2.1 billion) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US exports to India in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $6.4 billion, up 23.78% ($1.2 billion) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US imports from India in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $12.7 billion, up 7.43% ($0.9 billion) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with India in the 2nd quarter of 2017 was $6.4 billion, a 5.10% decrease ($0.3 billion) over the 2nd quarter of 2016.

India was the US 9th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.9318% of US total trade (up from 1.8321% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

India was the US 15th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 18th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.6509% of US total exports (up from 1.4112% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

India was the US 9th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 10th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.1113% of US total imports (up from 2.1044% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The major share of US exports to India in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 33.89% of US total exports to India (29.17% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 23.20% of US total exports to India (26.88% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 15.13% of US total exports to India (17.30% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 8.51% of US total exports to India (6.59% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.47% of US total exports to India (5.03% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 3.97% of US total exports to India (1.62% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.76% of US total exports to India (4.84% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);

  • Cotton (HS code 52) - an increase of $169.0 million;
