US Trade with Iraq

In the 1st quarter of 2017, US trade with Iraq totaled $2,998.0 million, up 180.29% ($1,928.4 million) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US exports to Iraq in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $338.0 million, up 19.85% ($56.0 million) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US imports from Iraq in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $2,660.0 million, up 237.72% ($1,872.4 million) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with Iraq in the 1st quarter of 2017 was $2,322.1 million, a 359.22% increase ($1,816.4 million) over the 1st quarter of 2016.

Iraq was the US 39th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 62nd in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.3196% of US total trade (up from 0.1222% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Iraq was the US 70th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 71st in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0907% of US total exports (up from 0.0811% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Iraq was the US 31st largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 56th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.4703% of US total imports (up from 0.1493% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

The major share of US exports to Iraq in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 80.43% of US total exports to Iraq (77.52% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 4.81% of US total exports to Iraq (9.05% in the 1st quarter of 2016);

  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - an increase of $3.6 million;
  • Arms and ammunition; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 93) - an increase of $2.1 million;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $1.6 million;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $1.3 million;
  • Photographic or cinematographic goods (HS code 37) - an increase of $1.1 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Iraq in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $55.6 million;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - a decrease of $6.2 million;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $4.4 million;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $4.2 million;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $1.8 million.
