US Trade with Iraq

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, US trade with Iraq totaled $3,408.7 million, up 91.51% ($1,628.7 million) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US exports to Iraq in the 2nd quarter of 2017 were $259.4 million, down 28.97% ($105.8 million) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US imports from Iraq in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $3,149.2 million, up 122.61% ($1,734.6 million) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with Iraq in the 2nd quarter of 2017 was $2,889.8 million, a 175.38% increase ($1,840.4 million) over the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Iraq was the US 39th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 50th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.3455% of US total trade (up from 0.1923% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Iraq was the US 79th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (down from 67th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.0674% of US total exports (down from 0.1005% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Iraq was the US 28th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 40th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.5233% of US total imports (up from 0.2517% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

US Exports to Iraq

The major share of US exports to Iraq in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 74.54% of US total exports to Iraq (68.15% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 8.09% of US total exports to Iraq (4.76% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 7.85% of US total exports to Iraq (19.21% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.63% of US total exports to Iraq (1.83% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in US exports to Iraq in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $31.1 million;
  • Arms and ammunition; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 93) - an increase of $3.1 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $3.0 million;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $2.6 million;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - an increase of $1.4 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Iraq in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $88.3 million;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $45.9 million;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $1.9 million;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $1.9 million;
  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - a decrease of $1.4 million;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - a decrease of $1.0 million;
  • Photographic or cinematographic goods (HS code 37) - a decrease of $0.8 million.
