US Trade with Iraq

In the first half of 2017, US trade with Iraq totaled $6,406.6 million, up 124.83% ($3,557.1 million) from the first half of 2016.

US exports to Iraq in the first half of 2017 were $597.4 million, down 7.70% ($49.9 million) from the first half of 2016.

US imports from Iraq in the first half of 2017 totaled $5,809.2 million, up 163.78% ($3,606.9 million) from the first half of 2016.

US trade deficit with Iraq in the first half of 2017 was $5,211.9 million, a 235.16% increase ($3,656.8 million) over the first half of 2016.

Iraq was the US 38th largest trading partner in the first half of 2017 (up from 57th in the first half of 2016), accounting for 0.3329% of US total trade (up from 0.1583% in the first half of 2016).

Iraq was the US 72nd largest export market in the first half of 2017 (down from 69th in the first half of 2016), accounting for 0.0789% of US total exports (down from 0.0910% in the first half of 2016).

Iraq was the US 29th largest supplier in the first half of 2017 (up from 49th in the first half of 2016), accounting for 0.4976% of US total imports (up from 0.2021% in the first half of 2016).

US Exports to Iraq

The major share of US exports to Iraq in the first half of 2017 (and in the first half of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 77.87% of US total exports to Iraq (72.23% in the first half of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 6.15% of US total exports to Iraq (5.77% in the first half of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 6.13% of US total exports to Iraq (14.79% in the first half of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.12% of US total exports to Iraq (1.86% in the first half of 2016).

  • Toys, games and sports requisites; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 95) - an increase of $8.1 million;
  • Arms and ammunition; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 93) - an increase of $5.3 million;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $2.8 million;
  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - an increase of $2.2 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Iraq in the first half of 2017 over the first half of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $143.9 million;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $45.9 million;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - a decrease of $7.3 million;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $6.3 million;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $6.0 million.
