US Trade with Iraq

In the first nine months of 2017, US trade with Iraq totaled $8,913.3 million, up 74.45% ($3,803.9 million) from the first nine months of 2016.

US exports to Iraq in the first nine months of 2017 were $919.2 million, down 2.27% ($21.4 million) from the first nine months of 2016.

US imports from Iraq in the first nine months of 2017 totaled $7,994.1 million, up 91.76% ($3,825.3 million) from the first nine months of 2016.

US trade deficit with Iraq in the first nine months of 2017 was $7,074.8 million, a 119.16% increase ($3,846.6 million) over the first nine months of 2016.

Iraq was the US 40th largest trading partner in the first nine months of 2017 (up from 51st in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 0.3061% of US total trade (up from 0.1950% in the first nine months of 2016).

Iraq was the US 70th largest export market in the first nine months of 2017 (just as in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 0.0807% of US total exports (down from 0.0889% in the first nine months of 2016).

Iraq was the US 32nd largest supplier in the first nine months of 2017 (up from 41st in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 0.4509% of US total imports (up from 0.2667% in the first nine months of 2016).

US Exports to Iraq

The major share of US exports to Iraq in the first nine months of 2017 (and in the first nine months of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 76.80% of US total exports to Iraq (75.16% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 8.65% of US total exports to Iraq (11.43% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 5.71% of US total exports to Iraq (5.31% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.16% of US total exports to Iraq (1.85% in the first nine months of 2016).

  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $5.9 million;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $5.4 million;
  • Arms and ammunition; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 93) - an increase of $5.3 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Iraq in the first nine months of 2017 over the first nine months of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $239.3 million;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $26.6 million;
  • Commodities not specified according to kind (HS code 99) - a decrease of $17.8 million;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $5.4 million;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $4.4 million.
