US Trade with Italy

In the 1st quarter of 2017, US trade with Italy totaled $16.2 billion, up 8.38% ($1.2 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US exports to Italy in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $4.9 billion, up 20.69% ($0.8 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US imports from Italy in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $11.3 billion, up 3.82% ($0.4 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with Italy in the 1st quarter of 2017 was $6.4 billion, a 6.10% decrease ($0.4 billion) over the 1st quarter of 2016.

Italy was the US 11th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2017 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.7224% of US total trade (up from 1.7038% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Italy was the US 19th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 20th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.3054% of US total exports (up from 1.1595% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Italy was the US 11th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2017 (down from 10th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.9970% of US total imports (down from 2.0624% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

The major share of US exports to Italy in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 31.91% of US total exports to Italy (34.58% in the 1st quarter of 2016);

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $51.1 million;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $49.7 million;
  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - an increase of $45.2 million;
  • Works of art, collectors’ pieces and antiques (HS code 97) - an increase of $35.9 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Italy in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:
