US Trade with Japan

In the 1st quarter of 2017, US trade with Japan totaled $50.3 billion, up 5.17% ($2.5 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $16.0 billion, up 6.48% ($1.0 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US imports from Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $34.2 billion, up 4.58% ($1.5 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 was $18.2 billion, a 2.95% increase ($0.5 billion) over the 1st quarter of 2016.

Japan was the US 4th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2017 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 5.3578% of US total trade (down from 5.4617% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Japan was the US 4th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2017 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 4.3043% of US total exports (down from 4.3333% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Japan was the US 4th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2017 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 6.0516% of US total imports (down from 6.2050% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

US Exports to Japan

The major share of US exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 39.44% of US total exports to Japan (44.51% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 20.35% of US total exports to Japan (18.53% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 19.02% of US total exports to Japan (18.54% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 8.24% of US total exports to Japan (3.98% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.93% of US total exports to Japan (3.30% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.37% of US total exports to Japan (2.90% in the 1st quarter of 2016);

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $262.0 million;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $176.1 million;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $173.6 million;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $153.3 million;
  • Works of art, collectors’ pieces and antiques (HS code 97) - an increase of $88.3 million;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $83.9 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:
