US Trade with Kuwait

In the first nine months of 2017, US trade with Kuwait totaled $6.5 billion, up 39.94% ($1.9 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US exports to Kuwait in the first nine months of 2017 totaled $4.1 billion, up 92.94% ($2.0 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US imports from Kuwait in the first nine months of 2017 were $2.4 billion, down 4.54% ($0.1 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US trade balance with Kuwait went from a deficit of $0.4 billion in the first nine months of 2016, to a surplus of $1.7 billion in the first nine months of 2017.

Kuwait was the US 48th largest trading partner in the first nine months of 2017 (up from 54th in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 0.2235% of US total trade (up from 0.1774% in the first nine months of 2016).

Kuwait was the US 39th largest export market in the first nine months of 2017 (up from 51st in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 0.3595% of US total exports (up from 0.2006% in the first nine months of 2016).

Kuwait was the US 59th largest supplier in the first nine months of 2017 (down from 56th in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 0.1361% of US total imports (down from 0.1618% in the first nine months of 2016).

US Exports to Kuwait

The major share of US exports to Kuwait in the first nine months of 2017 (and in the first nine months of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 70.96% of US total exports to Kuwait (65.52% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 5.89% of US total exports to Kuwait (8.23% in the first nine months of 2016);

The largest declines in US exports to Kuwait in the first nine months of 2017 over the first nine months of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $37.8 million;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $19.0 million.
