US Trade with Malaysia

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, US trade with Malaysia totaled $12.9 billion, up 2.22% ($0.3 billion) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US exports to Malaysia in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $3.4 billion, up 15.00% ($0.4 billion) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US imports from Malaysia in the 2nd quarter of 2017 were $9.5 billion, down 1.65% ($0.2 billion) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with Malaysia in the 2nd quarter of 2017 was $6.2 billion, a 8.89% decrease ($0.6 billion) over the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Malaysia was the US 17th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 18th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.3089% of US total trade (down from 1.3647% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Malaysia was the US 21st largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 25th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.8785% of US total exports (up from 0.8082% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Malaysia was the US 15th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.5841% of US total imports (down from 1.7247% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The major share of US exports to Malaysia in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $20.5 million;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $19.8 million;
