US Trade with Mexico

In the first half of 2017, US trade with Mexico totaled $275.4 billion, up 5.82% ($15.1 billion) from the first half of 2016.

US exports to Mexico in the first half of 2017 totaled $118.8 billion, up 4.56% ($5.2 billion) from the first half of 2016.

US imports from Mexico in the first half of 2017 totaled $156.6 billion, up 6.80% ($10.0 billion) from the first half of 2016.

US trade deficit with Mexico in the first half of 2017 was $37.8 billion, a 14.50% increase ($4.8 billion) over the first half of 2016.

Mexico was the US 3rd largest trading partner in the first half of 2017 (just as in the first half of 2016), accounting for 14.3077% of US total trade (down from 14.4521% in the first half of 2016).

Mexico was the US 2nd largest export market in the first half of 2017 (just as in the first half of 2016), accounting for 15.6890% of US total exports (down from 15.9778% in the first half of 2016).

Mexico was the US 2nd largest supplier in the first half of 2017 (just as in the first half of 2016), accounting for 13.4119% of US total imports (down from 13.4564% in the first half of 2016).

The major share of US exports to Mexico in the first half of 2017 (and in the first half of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - an increase of $920.7 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $587.8 million;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $561.1 million;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $458.2 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Mexico in the first half of 2017 over the first half of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:
