US Trade with Nigeria

In the 1st quarter of 2017, US trade with Nigeria totaled $2,178.4 million, up 62.06% ($834.2 million) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2017 were $441.1 million, down 8.36% ($40.2 million) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $1,737.2 million, up 101.34% ($874.4 million) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2017 was $1,296.1 million, a 239.77% increase ($914.6 million) over the 1st quarter of 2016.

Nigeria was the US 49th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 56th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2322% of US total trade (up from 0.1536% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Nigeria was the US 62nd largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2017 (down from 57th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.1184% of US total exports (down from 0.1385% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Nigeria was the US 39th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 53rd in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.3071% of US total imports (up from 0.1636% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

US Exports to Nigeria

The major share of US exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 40.04% of US total exports to Nigeria (49.39% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 30.30% of US total exports to Nigeria (12.58% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 12.31% of US total exports to Nigeria (13.10% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 11.05% of US total exports to Nigeria (15.67% in the 1st quarter of 2016);

  • Dairy produce; birds eggs; natural honey; edible products of animal origin, not elsewhere specified or included (HS code 04) - an increase of $3.1 million;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $2.9 million;

  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $12.7 million;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $8.6 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $6.5 million;
  • Miscellaneous articles of base metal (HS code 83) - a decrease of $2.6 million;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $1.4 million;
