US Trade with Nigeria

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, US trade with Nigeria totaled $2,167.5 million, up 27.47% ($467.1 million) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US exports to Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $585.1 million, up 22.32% ($106.8 million) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US imports from Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $1,582.5 million, up 29.49% ($360.4 million) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2017 was $997.4 million, a 34.10% increase ($253.6 million) over the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Nigeria was the US 49th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 54th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2197% of US total trade (up from 0.1837% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Nigeria was the US 55th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 59th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.1521% of US total exports (up from 0.1316% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Nigeria was the US 40th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 46th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2630% of US total imports (up from 0.2175% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

US Exports to Nigeria

The major share of US exports to Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 39.98% of US total exports to Nigeria (50.78% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 35.05% of US total exports to Nigeria (23.08% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 13.11% of US total exports to Nigeria (17.60% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 5.98% of US total exports to Nigeria (1.25% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.02% of US total exports to Nigeria (2.77% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.23% of US total exports to Nigeria (1.33% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.18% of US total exports to Nigeria (1.66% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in US exports to Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $78.8 million;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $29.0 million;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $19.6 million;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $14.5 million;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $5.9 million;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $4.6 million;
  • Miscellaneous edible preparations (HS code 21) - an increase of $3.6 million;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $2.0 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Nigeria in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $24.8 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $5.2 million;
  • Preparations of vegetables, fruit, nuts or other parts of plants (HS code 20) - a decrease of $5.1 million;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $4.4 million;
  • Essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations (HS code 33) - a decrease of $4.3 million;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $3.5 million;
  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - a decrease of $3.1 million;
  • Miscellaneous articles of base metal (HS code 83) - a decrease of $1.9 million.
