US Trade with Nigeria

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, US trade with Nigeria totaled $2,134.2 million, up 44.01% ($652.2 million) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

US exports to Nigeria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $476.6 million, up 4.61% ($21.0 million) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

US imports from Nigeria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $1,657.6 million, up 61.50% ($631.2 million) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with Nigeria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $1,181.1 million, a 106.89% increase ($610.2 million) over the 3rd quarter of 2016.

Nigeria was the US 49th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 55th in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2163% of US total trade (up from 0.1807% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Nigeria was the US 59th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 61st in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.1250% of US total exports (down from 0.1315% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Nigeria was the US 41st largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (up from 52nd in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2737% of US total imports (up from 0.2168% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

US Exports to Nigeria

The major share of US exports to Nigeria in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 50.23% of US total exports to Nigeria (47.71% in the 3rd quarter of 2016);

  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - an increase of $3.5 million;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $3.2 million;

  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $1.8 million;

  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $2.1 million;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $1.5 million.
