US Trade with Russia

In the first half of 2017, US trade with Russia totaled $11.8 billion, up 20.77% ($2.0 billion) from the first half of 2016.

US exports to Russia in the first half of 2017 totaled $3.2 billion, up 14.53% ($0.4 billion) from the first half of 2016.

US imports from Russia in the first half of 2017 totaled $8.6 billion, up 23.28% ($1.6 billion) from the first half of 2016.

US trade deficit with Russia in the first half of 2017 was $5.4 billion, a 29.20% increase ($1.2 billion) over the first half of 2016.

Russia was the US 30th largest trading partner in the first half of 2017 (just as in the first half of 2016), accounting for 0.6128% of US total trade (up from 0.5424% in the first half of 2016).

Russia was the US 36th largest export market in the first half of 2017 (up from 39th in the first half of 2016), accounting for 0.4245% of US total exports (up from 0.3947% in the first half of 2016).

Russia was the US 23rd largest supplier in the first half of 2017 (up from 25th in the first half of 2016), accounting for 0.7349% of US total imports (up from 0.6388% in the first half of 2016).

The major share of US exports to Russia in the first half of 2017 (and in the first half of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 75.38% of US total exports to Russia (71.43% in the first half of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 13.89% of US total exports to Russia (13.81% in the first half of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 3.12% of US total exports to Russia (5.30% in the first half of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.27% of US total exports to Russia (3.40% in the first half of 2016);

  • Essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations (HS code 33) - an increase of $19.1 million;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $15.9 million;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $11.2 million;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $10.1 million.
