US Trade with Saudi Arabia

In the 1st quarter of 2017, US trade with Saudi Arabia totaled $10.0 billion, up 13.92% ($1.2 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US exports to Saudi Arabia in the 1st quarter of 2017 were $3.6 billion, down 24.13% ($1.1 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US imports from Saudi Arabia in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $6.5 billion, up 57.84% ($2.4 billion) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

US trade balance with Saudi Arabia went from a surplus of $0.6 billion in the 1st quarter of 2016, to a deficit of $2.9 billion in the 1st quarter of 2017.

Saudi Arabia was the US 21st largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 23rd in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.0705% of US total trade (up from 1.0074% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Saudi Arabia was the US 21st largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2017 (down from 19th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.9620% of US total exports (down from 1.3592% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Saudi Arabia was the US 18th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 22nd in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.1419% of US total imports (up from 0.7757% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

US Exports to Saudi Arabia

The major share of US exports to Saudi Arabia in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 66.20% of US total exports to Saudi Arabia (75.51% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 13.62% of US total exports to Saudi Arabia (6.83% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 8.16% of US total exports to Saudi Arabia (6.92% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.63% of US total exports to Saudi Arabia (2.42% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.24% of US total exports to Saudi Arabia (1.10% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in US exports to Saudi Arabia in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $90.1 million;
  • Residues and waste from the food industries; prepared animal feed (HS code 23) - an increase of $41.6 million;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $23.3 million;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $17.2 million;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $11.0 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Saudi Arabia in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - a decrease of $642.1 million;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $193.9 million;

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $118.6 million;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $38.0 million;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $35.0 million;
  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - a decrease of $24.7 million;
