US Trade with Canada

In the 3rd quarter of 2017, US trade with Canada totaled $144,370.1 million, up 28.88% ($32,350.5 million) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

US exports to Canada in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $70,563.4 million, up 22.97% ($13,180.1 million) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

US imports from Canada in the 3rd quarter of 2017 totaled $73,806.6 million, up 35.09% ($19,170.4 million) from the 3rd quarter of 2016.

US trade balance with Canada went from a surplus of $2,747.1 million in the 3rd quarter of 2016, to a deficit of $3,243.2 million in the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Canada was the US 2nd largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 1st in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 14.6288% of US total trade (up from 13.6609% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Canada was the US largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 18.5049% of US total exports (up from 16.5603% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

Canada was the US 3rd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (down from 2nd in the 3rd quarter of 2016), accounting for 12.1880% of US total imports (up from 11.5390% in the 3rd quarter of 2016).

The major share of US exports to Canada in the 3rd quarter of 2017 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $441.3 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $342.1 million;
  • Commodities not specified according to kind (HS code 99) - an increase of $315.2 million;
  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - an increase of $260.3 million;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $253.8 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Canada in the 3rd quarter of 2017 over the 3rd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:
