US Trade with China

In 2013, US trade with China totaled $580.8 billion, up 4.67% ($25.9 billion) from 2012.

US exports to China in 2013 totaled $121.7 billion, up 10.14% ($11.2 billion) from 2012.

US imports from China in 2013 totaled $459.1 billion, up 3.31% ($14.7 billion) from 2012.

US trade deficit with China in 2013 was $337.4 billion, a 1.05% increase ($3.5 billion) over 2012.

China was the US 2nd largest trading partner in 2013 (just as in 2012), accounting for 14.88% of US total trade (up from 14.30% in 2012).

China was the US 3rd largest export market in 2013 (just as in 2012), accounting for 7.72% of US total exports (up from 7.15% in 2012).

China was the US largest supplier in 2013 (just as in 2012), accounting for 19.73% of US total imports (up from 19.03% in 2012).

US Exports to China

The major share of US exports to China in 2013 (and in 2012) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 44.61% of US total exports to China (39.67% in 2012);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 18.63% of US total exports to China (20.06% in 2012);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 12.70% of US total exports to China (13.74% in 2012);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 7.45% of US total exports to China (8.86% in 2012);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.65% of US total exports to China (5.75% in 2012);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 3.67% of US total exports to China (3.95% in 2012);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 2.92% of US total exports to China (4.24% in 2012).

The largest gains in US exports to China in 2013 over 2012 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - an increase of $4,221.3 million;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $3,270.4 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $1,719.7 million;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $837.7 million;
  • Residues and waste from the food industries; prepared animal feed (HS code 23) - an increase of $830.5 million;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $704.3 million;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $648.1 million;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $638.7 million;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $631.2 million.

The largest declines in US exports to China in 2013 over 2012 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cotton (HS code 52) - a decrease of $1,152.6 million;
  • Copper and articles thereof (HS code 74) - a decrease of $470.5 million.
