US Trade with China

In 2014, US trade with China totaled $610.0 billion, up 5.02% ($29.1 billion) from 2013.

US exports to China in 2014 totaled $123.7 billion, up 1.61% ($2.0 billion) from 2013.

US imports from China in 2014 totaled $486.3 billion, up 5.92% ($27.2 billion) from 2013.

US trade deficit with China in 2014 was $362.6 billion, a 7.48% increase ($25.2 billion) over 2013.

China was the US 2nd largest trading partner in 2014 (just as in 2013), accounting for 15.13% of US total trade (up from 14.88% in 2013).

China was the US 3rd largest export market in 2014 (just as in 2013), accounting for 7.64% of US total exports (down from 7.72% in 2013).

China was the US largest supplier in 2014 (just as in 2013), accounting for 20.17% of US total imports (up from 19.73% in 2013).

US Exports to China

The major share of US exports to China in 2014 (and in 2013) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 47.98% of US total exports to China (44.61% in 2013);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 18.34% of US total exports to China (18.63% in 2013);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 12.64% of US total exports to China (12.70% in 2013);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.35% of US total exports to China (7.45% in 2013);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.67% of US total exports to China (5.65% in 2013);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 2.83% of US total exports to China (3.67% in 2013);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.90% of US total exports to China (2.92% in 2013).

The largest gains in US exports to China in 2014 over 2013 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $2,939.8 million;
  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - an increase of $1,337.7 million;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $1,238.2 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $632.2 million;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $389.0 million.

The largest declines in US exports to China in 2014 over 2013 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cotton (HS code 52) - a decrease of $1,141.8 million;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $1,026.3 million;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $727.1 million;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $605.6 million;
  • Copper and articles thereof (HS code 74) - a decrease of $559.8 million;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $506.7 million;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $375.5 million.
