US Trade with China

In 2015, US trade with China totaled $618.8 billion, up 1.45% ($8.8 billion) from 2014.

US exports to China in 2015 were $116.2 billion, down 6.06% ($7.5 billion) from 2014.

US imports from China in 2015 totaled $502.6 billion, up 3.36% ($16.3 billion) from 2014.

US trade deficit with China in 2015 was $386.4 billion, a 6.57% increase ($23.8 billion) over 2014.

China was the US largest trading partner in 2015 (up from 2nd in 2014), accounting for 16.24% of US total trade (up from 15.13% in 2014).

China was the US 3rd largest export market in 2015 (just as in 2014), accounting for 7.73% of US total exports (up from 7.64% in 2014).

China was the US largest supplier in 2015 (just as in 2014), accounting for 21.79% of US total imports (up from 20.17% in 2014).

US Exports to China

The major share of US exports to China in 2015 (and in 2014) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 51.11% of US total exports to China (47.98% in 2014);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 16.47% of US total exports to China (18.34% in 2014);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 13.26% of US total exports to China (12.64% in 2014);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.53% of US total exports to China (5.67% in 2014);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 5.14% of US total exports to China (6.35% in 2014);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 2.97% of US total exports to China (2.83% in 2014);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.61% of US total exports to China (1.90% in 2014).

The largest gains in US exports to China in 2015 over 2014 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - an increase of $1,515.3 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $747.9 million;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $665.3 million;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $469.8 million;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $407.8 million;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $396.2 million.

The largest declines in US exports to China in 2015 over 2014 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $591.5 million;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - a decrease of $503.3 million;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $477.8 million;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $477.4 million;
  • Raw hides and skins (other than furskins) and leather (HS code 41) - a decrease of $372.9 million;
