US Trade with China

In the first nine months of 2017, US trade with China totaled $470.9 billion, up 24.16% ($91.6 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US exports to China in the first nine months of 2017 totaled $91.0 billion, up 14.73% ($11.7 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US imports from China in the first nine months of 2017 totaled $379.9 billion, up 26.65% ($79.9 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US trade deficit with China in the first nine months of 2017 was $288.9 billion, a 30.94% increase ($68.3 billion) over the first nine months of 2016.

China was the US largest trading partner in the first nine months of 2017 (up from 2nd in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 16.1745% of US total trade (up from 14.4736% in the first nine months of 2016).

China was the US 3rd largest export market in the first nine months of 2017 (just as in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 7.9942% of US total exports (up from 7.5013% in the first nine months of 2016).

China was the US largest supplier in the first nine months of 2017 (just as in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 21.4274% of US total imports (up from 19.1914% in the first nine months of 2016).

US Exports to China

The major share of US exports to China in the first nine months of 2017 (and in the first nine months of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 50.71% of US total exports to China (53.74% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.06% of US total exports to China (13.85% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 11.64% of US total exports to China (13.25% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 6.89% of US total exports to China (2.82% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 6.11% of US total exports to China (6.39% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.80% of US total exports to China (4.80% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.59% of US total exports to China (1.30% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 1.03% of US total exports to China (0.50% in the first nine months of 2016).

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $2,102.8 million;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $1,004.4 million;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $733.4 million;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $541.7 million;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $459.8 million;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $413.5 million;
  • Cotton (HS code 52) - an increase of $378.5 million;
