US Trade with India

In the 4th quarter of 2017, US trade with India totaled $19.3 billion, up 5.91% ($1.1 billion) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

US exports to India in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $6.6 billion, up 4.84% ($0.3 billion) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

US imports from India in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $12.7 billion, up 6.47% ($0.8 billion) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with India in the 4th quarter of 2017 was $6.1 billion, a 8.27% increase ($0.5 billion) over the 4th quarter of 2016.

India was the US 10th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2017 (down from 9th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.8503% of US total trade (down from 1.8947% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

India was the US 15th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2017 (just as in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 1.6149% of US total exports (down from 1.6575% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

India was the US 10th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 11th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.0013% of US total imports (down from 2.0488% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

The major share of US exports to India in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 27.41% of US total exports to India (25.56% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 24.23% of US total exports to India (37.99% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.72% of US total exports to India (13.66% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 14.57% of US total exports to India (5.56% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 7.26% of US total exports to India (4.77% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.71% of US total exports to India (3.87% in the 4th quarter of 2016);

  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $77.1 million;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $63.1 million;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $56.0 million;
