US Trade with India

In the first nine months of 2017, US trade with India totaled $57.0 billion, up 11.39% ($5.8 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US exports to India in the first nine months of 2017 totaled $19.1 billion, up 24.06% ($3.7 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US imports from India in the first nine months of 2017 totaled $37.9 billion, up 5.93% ($2.1 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US trade deficit with India in the first nine months of 2017 was $18.8 billion, a 7.79% decrease ($1.6 billion) over the first nine months of 2016.

India was the US 9th largest trading partner in the first nine months of 2017 (just as in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 1.9579% of US total trade (up from 1.9528% in the first nine months of 2016).

India was the US 14th largest export market in the first nine months of 2017 (up from 18th in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 1.6793% of US total exports (up from 1.4572% in the first nine months of 2016).

India was the US 8th largest supplier in the first nine months of 2017 (up from 9th in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 2.1368% of US total imports (down from 2.2881% in the first nine months of 2016).

The major share of US exports to India in the first nine months of 2017 (and in the first nine months of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 29.14% of US total exports to India (27.54% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 28.47% of US total exports to India (29.93% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.65% of US total exports to India (17.19% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 10.07% of US total exports to India (5.88% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 4.91% of US total exports to India (5.62% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.60% of US total exports to India (4.53% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.02% of US total exports to India (3.42% in the first nine months of 2016);

  • Commodities not specified according to kind (HS code 99) - an increase of $84.7 million;

The largest declines in US exports to India in the first nine months of 2017 over the first nine months of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:
