In the first nine months of 2017, US trade with Japan totaled $153.3 billion, up 10.64% ($14.7 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US exports to Japan in the first nine months of 2017 totaled $49.9 billion, up 7.54% ($3.5 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US imports from Japan in the first nine months of 2017 totaled $103.5 billion, up 12.19% ($11.2 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US trade deficit with Japan in the first nine months of 2017 was $53.6 billion, a 16.90% increase ($7.7 billion) over the first nine months of 2016.

Japan was the US 4th largest trading partner in the first nine months of 2017 (just as in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 5.2666% of US total trade (down from 5.2888% in the first nine months of 2016).

Japan was the US 4th largest export market in the first nine months of 2017 (just as in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 4.3803% of US total exports (down from 4.3849% in the first nine months of 2016).

  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $247.6 million;
  • Works of art, collectors’ pieces and antiques (HS code 97) - an increase of $181.1 million;
