US Trade with Nigeria

In the 4th quarter of 2017, US trade with Nigeria totaled $2,994.0 million, up 73.53% ($1,268.7 million) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

US exports to Nigeria in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $652.3 million, up 41.76% ($192.2 million) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

US imports from Nigeria in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $2,341.7 million, up 85.09% ($1,076.5 million) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

US trade deficit with Nigeria in the 4th quarter of 2017 was $1,689.4 million, a 109.85% increase ($884.4 million) over the 4th quarter of 2016.

Nigeria was the US 43rd largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 52nd in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2871% of US total trade (up from 0.1794% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Nigeria was the US 56th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 65th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.1600% of US total exports (up from 0.1215% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Nigeria was the US 35th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2017 (up from 45th in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.3685% of US total imports (up from 0.2170% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

US Exports to Nigeria

The major share of US exports to Nigeria in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations (HS code 33) - an increase of $2.4 million;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $2.2 million;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $2.2 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Nigeria in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - a decrease of $14.6 million;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $7.2 million;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $7.1 million;

  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $2.1 million.
