US Trade with Russia

In the first nine months of 2017, US trade with Russia totaled $18.3 billion, up 19.87% ($3.0 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US exports to Russia in the first nine months of 2017 totaled $5.1 billion, up 18.46% ($0.8 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US imports from Russia in the first nine months of 2017 totaled $13.2 billion, up 20.42% ($2.2 billion) from the first nine months of 2016.

US trade deficit with Russia in the first nine months of 2017 was $8.1 billion, a 21.69% increase ($1.4 billion) over the first nine months of 2016.

Russia was the US 29th largest trading partner in the first nine months of 2017 (up from 30th in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 0.6294% of US total trade (up from 0.5833% in the first nine months of 2016).

Russia was the US 35th largest export market in the first nine months of 2017 (up from 38th in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 0.4483% of US total exports (up from 0.4074% in the first nine months of 2016).

Russia was the US 23rd largest supplier in the first nine months of 2017 (up from 24th in the first nine months of 2016), accounting for 0.7456% of US total imports (up from 0.7024% in the first nine months of 2016).

The major share of US exports to Russia in the first nine months of 2017 (and in the first nine months of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 75.68% of US total exports to Russia (71.82% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.08% of US total exports to Russia (13.83% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 2.77% of US total exports to Russia (4.50% in the first nine months of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.15% of US total exports to Russia (3.05% in the first nine months of 2016);

  • Essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations (HS code 33) - an increase of $35.5 million;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $20.8 million;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $15.6 million.

The largest declines in US exports to Russia in the first nine months of 2017 over the first nine months of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $57.8 million;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $31.4 million;
  • Man-made staple fibers (HS code 55) - a decrease of $22.5 million.
