US Trade

In 2014, US trade totaled $4,030.6 billion, up 3.24% ($126.4 billion) from 2013.

US exports in 2014 totaled $1,619.7 billion, up 2.67% ($42.2 billion) from 2013.

US imports in 2014 totaled $2,410.9 billion, up 3.62% ($84.3 billion) from 2013.

US trade deficit in 2014 was $791.1 billion, a 5.62% increase ($42.1 billion) over 2013.

US Exports

The major share of US exports in 2014 (and in 2013) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 46.04% of US total exports (45.59% in 2013);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.97% of US total exports (15.17% in 2013);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 10.30% of US total exports (10.07% in 2013);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 9.56% of US total exports (9.31% in 2013);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.87% of US total exports (5.04% in 2013);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 3.96% of US total exports (4.54% in 2013);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.49% of US total exports (2.53% in 2013);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.73% of US total exports (1.81% in 2013).

The largest gains in US exports in 2014 over 2013 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof (HS code 88) - an increase of $10,288.2 million;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $6,735.8 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $6,526.6 million;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $6,284.1 million.

The largest declines in US exports in 2014 over 2013 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $7,552.3 million.
