US Trade

In 2015, US trade was $3,810.7 billion, down 5.46% ($219.9 billion) from 2014.

US exports in 2015 were $1,503.9 billion, down 7.15% ($115.9 billion) from 2014.

US imports in 2015 were $2,306.8 billion, down 4.32% ($104.0 billion) from 2014.

US trade deficit in 2015 was $803.0 billion, a 1.50% increase ($11.8 billion) over 2014.

US Exports

The major share of US exports in 2015 (and in 2014) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 48.17% of US total exports (46.04% in 2014);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 15.68% of US total exports (14.97% in 2014);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 9.19% of US total exports (9.56% in 2014);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 7.69% of US total exports (10.30% in 2014);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.57% of US total exports (4.87% in 2014);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 3.86% of US total exports (3.96% in 2014);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.54% of US total exports (2.49% in 2014);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.78% of US total exports (1.73% in 2014).

The largest gains in US exports in 2015 over 2014 were recorded for the following product groups:

The largest declines in US exports in 2015 over 2014 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $49,464.9 million;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $13,945.2 million;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $8,858.8 million;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $6,090.2 million;
