US Trade

In 2017, US trade totaled $3,954.5 billion, up 6.80% ($251.6 billion) from 2016.

US exports in 2017 totaled $1,546.1 billion, up 6.39% ($92.9 billion) from 2016.

US imports in 2017 totaled $2,408.4 billion, up 7.06% ($158.7 billion) from 2016.

US trade deficit in 2017 was $862.3 billion, a 8.27% increase ($65.8 billion) over 2016.

US Exports

The major share of US exports in 2017 (and in 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 46.96% of US total exports (48.47% in 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 15.18% of US total exports (15.49% in 2016);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 9.50% of US total exports (7.07% in 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 9.28% of US total exports (9.70% in 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.42% of US total exports (4.38% in 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 3.86% of US total exports (3.94% in 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.52% of US total exports (2.56% in 2016);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.80% of US total exports (1.75% in 2016).

The largest gains in US exports in 2017 over 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $43,317.0 million;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $11,149.9 million;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $7,049.5 million;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $5,840.2 million.
